Tues 30 April – Streaky Bay to Mundrabilla

Weather good – low to mid 20’s.

Start of the Nullarbor (no trees / null arbor)
Up early, aiming to get to Eucla today.  Enjoyed our break in Streaky Bay.

This half of the Nullarbor trip, on the ‘new’ Eyre Hwy is interesting in that the highway skirts the top of the Bunda Cliffs.  Different to the ‘old’ (unsealed) Eyre Hwy I travelled on 40 years ago with my sister – located much further inland with no chance of sea views.

Head of the Bight
The first stop was at the Head of Bight, where National Parks have built a whale watching centre/platforms.  $5 for the privilege of viewing a ‘pod of seaweed’ which we thought for a few moments might have been dolphins.   A month or so too early for whales.

Next stop we headed down a dirt track which had been badly dug up.  We proceeded, though very bumpy and were rewarded with reasonable views over the cliffs.  We later figured this track was deliberately dug up, rather than by someone being stupid, as National Parks have now closed the old tracks and put in three deliberate viewing points.  The first of these was the best, and afforded us magnificent views of the Bunda Cliffs.  The second and third were worth the look, but not as good as the first.

Brief stop at Nullarbor Roadhouse.

Proceeding on to Eucla, Clive still driving (amazing driving endurance…) we got to Eucla at about the 10 hour mark.  It had not seemed like a hard days driving though, as we’d had numerous sightseeing stops.  ‘No room at the inn’ in Eucla, so we proceeded through to Mundrabilla.  Found ourselves ‘one star’ fibro shack accommodation in the form of the Mundrabilla Motel.  Actually it was clean and the bed was comfortable, AND we had 14” colour TV with NO remote control and FOUR stations to choose from!  I was more tired than Clive so he cooked some meat for dinner (after doing all that driving).
