Thurs 6 to Friday 7 June – Karratha / Dampier

The road from Coral Bay to Karratha changed from vegetated sand dunes, to spinifex and red dirt, to spinifex and gravel, to occasional rocky outcrops, to immense rocky outcrops.  We drove through and past what seemed to be whole ranges of mountains not recorded on our maps.  Only a few homesteads and a roadhouse or two out here, but an interesting drive due to the change in landscape.
Karratha is home to about 1,200 people and doesn't appear that big.  Everywhere you see uniformed staff of Rio Tinto, Woodside etc.  The roads seem full of erratic and crazy drivers.
On Friday we explored Dampier port, North West Shelf Gas Venture, and Burrup Peninsula including famed aboriginal petroglyphs (rock art).
Weather is cloudy, but hot (high 20's).

Rocky outcrops start to appear on the landscape

If you haven't seen the movie - do.

Helen & Red Dog, obviously

Clive & Red Dog

Very faded sign was a bit hard to find

Trying to find some more.  There are thousands of examples in this gorge - some stand out more than others.

Obviously an emu.

Sturt Desert Pea beside the road

Sculpture in honour of staff who lost their lives or seriously injured in creating the NW Shelf Gas platforms etc.

Cross section of the gas pipeline, from the three platforms on the NW Shelf eventually to Perth.

Rocky outcrops everywhere.

Hammersley Iron Pilbara ore train, kilometres long, bringing ore from Tom Price and Newman to Dampier for shipping off shore.
